The Diamond Earrings Women Are Finally Sleeping In(And Why Their Ears Stopped Hurting)

Most studs were never designed for a pillow. A small change at the back of the earring is what lets these diamond studs stay in from morning to morning.

Round lab-grown diamond sleep studs, worn from lobe to helix.

She has the comfiest bed. The softest pillows. Sheets she researched for weeks. And still, most nights, she wakes at two in the morning with a sore earlobe and a stud digging into the side of her head.

So she does what most of us do. She takes her earrings out before bed, leaves them on the bedside table, and hopes she remembers to put them back in. Some nights a back rolls under the bed. Some mornings she forgets them altogether.

It's such an ordinary annoyance that hardly anyone talks about it. Ask any group of women who wear studs every day, though, and almost all of them have a routine built around it.

Why ordinary studs hurt at night

The problem isn't the diamond at the front. It's the hardware at the back. A standard stud uses a butterfly back that stands away from the lobe, with the sharp tip of the post poking out past it. When you lie on your side, the pillow pushes all of that into the skin behind your ear.

Rachel Galley's answer was to redesign the back instead of asking women to change how they sleep. The post screws into a small, flat disc that sits close against the lobe. There are no butterfly wings and no exposed tip, so there's nothing for the pillow to press into.

Left: what sits behind the lobe. Right: the screw-on flat back that replaces the butterfly.

The diamond stays at the front. The comfort comes from what's missing at the back.

What a night looks like now

An illustrative night

  1. Earrings stay in. Before: taken out and left on the bedside table.

  2. Turns onto her side and keeps sleeping. Before: woken by a back pressing into her skin.

  3. Wakes up already wearing them. Before: hunting for a back that rolled under the bed.

Why these are different

A flat, screw-on back

No butterfly and no post tip, so it sits close to the skin. The screw fitting is designed to keep the back secure overnight.

Questions people ask

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical makeup and crystal structure as mined diamonds. The difference is where they formed, not what they are.

How do I put them in?

The flat back screws onto the post, so it takes a little more care than a butterfly the first time. Customers find it easiest to put the diamond through from the front, gently pinch the lobe so a few threads show at the back, then turn the disc on until it sits flat. Once it's on, it's designed to stay put.

Will they fall out?

The screw-on back is designed to stay secure. Customers mention they stay in when brushing their hair, where other earrings had fallen out.

Which size should I choose?

For everyday and overnight wear, most people pick 0.25 ct (3.2 mm) or 0.30 ct (3.4 mm). For more sparkle, go for 0.50 ct (4 mm) or 1 ct (5 mm).
